• Preparing for a GORUCK Challenge & Light – Session 1 & 2

    Friday. April 18th, 7:00pm

I was excited for the opportunity to meet the “new blood” – the folks that are preparing for the GORUCK Challenge & Light. Drip City Coffee Company is definitely our rally-point for all things TRVLSQD in Seattle, and they were once again a fantastic host! The Team was on hand to cover information that could help folks to be better prepared for their first GRC, Light, or even be a refresher. I was very happy to meet the ones that were lucky enough to attend. We had plenty of drinks flowing (thank you Mark:) and even better conversations were had! I know the information that was presented will allow for a better and more prepared participant.

    Here’s what we covered:

    • Gear – Ruck, Clothing, Boots, Accessories, Bricks,
    • Nutrition – Drinks, Food, Snacks and BEER:)
    • Cold Water Immersion
    • Footcare

Some even doubled up the learning experience and showed up for the Alki Beach Workout early Saturday morning! As these Sessions continue, they will only get better and more of you will crush that GORUCK Challenge and Light. Thank you to Mark & Jeremy from Drip City Coffee Company for hosting these Sessions, to Brian Lohr from All-Day Ruckoff for the pictures, to the TRVLSQD GRT’s that were on hand to give feedback, and to the attendees – without you none of this would have been possible.

Don’t miss Session 3 – Leadership with Special Guest MSG Ed Hall in Tacoma on April 25th at 7:00pm!

    Aloha,

    Session 1 and 2

  • TRVLSQD TRAINING EVOLUTIONS – THE NEW SESSIONS

A few weeks ago, GORUCK was in town for the most challenging TEAM Event they have ever conducted – the first HCL001, Seattle, WA. It was three Events, in three Days, consecutively. It started with the 24HR HEAVY, then a break, the GORUCK Challenge, another break, then the finale Event – the GORUCK Light. It was a brutal start in the cold Cascade Mountains, only to finish under the warm sun in downtown Seattle! TRVLSQD was the folks to suggest this madness, and we were the first location to experience the legendary suffering! It was in this suffering that a new fire was started…

TRVLSQD exists to help folks train for their first GRC or Light. We are also a very large group for consultation on GORUCK Selection , HEAVY, and other GR Events. We have been doing so for years now, and the time has come to evolve our training regimen.

We will always host PT/Rucking Sessions on the weekends prior to any GR Event, AND we will now be adding a specific group of Training Evolutions or Sessions. These Sessions will be during the 4-weeks prior to a GRC/Light. They will cover various topics of interest to anyone interested in learning more from veteran GRT’s (folks that have completed at least a GRC or Light). They will be open-discussion forums designed to spawn conversations to help you with anything from GEAR to FOOD, TEAM to WATER IMMERSION. We will cover it all over the span of the 4 weeks.

The 4 Sessions will be held on Friday night at 7:00pm in various locations. Most will be held in Seattle as this is where the GRC/Lights will be. (Session 3 is the only exception – It will be in the Tacoma vicinity as this is where our guest speaker resides. Session 4 starts at 6:00pm versus 7:00pm)

    Session 1 – GEAR & NUTRITION
This session will cover all aspects of gear from your ruck, to clothing, to accessories and shoes .We’ll also be discussing the proper nutrition needed for a GRC or Light, Pre-Workouts and during the Events. Expect the Session to last 1-2 Hours (based on questions/answers). We will have GEAR & Nutrition examples on hand so folks can see what others have already experienced/used.

Session 2 – WATER IMMERSION & FOOT CARE
This session will cover all aspects of dealing with cold water immersion, staying wet during a GRC or LIGHT, how to stay warm, etc. Once this topic has been covered, we will transition into talking about caring for your feet during the Event. Shoes, Socks, blister care, maceration, etc. will be covered. Expect this Session to last 1-2 Hours (based on questions/answers).

    Session 3 – LEADERSHIP
This session will be a presentation by a guest speaker that is very much a part of the TRVLSQD Family. Speaking on Leadership, Teamwork, and Organization will be MSG Ed Hall, 1st SF(A) Based out of Joint-Base Lewis McChord. MSG Hall has extensive training on leadership, and I’m proud that he has agreed to speak on this topic. Understand that MSG Hall is a very personable individual and will engage all of us in a very open discussion/forum. This is a rare opportunity to talk to a future Cadre for GORUCK! Expect this Session to last 1-2 hours (based on questions / answers)

Session 4-  GORUCK PT / Specific Exercises
This session will be the last session before the GRC/Light. We will be outside going through various techniques and exercises to help get you familiar with what you may / may not see at a GRC/Light. We want you to be able to execute certain movements (buddies-carries, etc.) Expect this Session to last 1-2 Hours (based on teaching the techniques & practice) This session will also start an hour earlier to give folks plenty of daylight practice time.

More information will be posted here on the Website, and for now let’s prepare for Session 1:

  • Cedar River 12-Miler

    2 /16/14

The Seattle -Tacoma team gathered Sunday morning to test ourselves under specific mission parameters – Cover 12 Miles with a 35+ Ruck as a Team, in under 3:30 min. The original mission was to visit the hallowed grounds of Selection 008 – Mother Nature had other plans.

    MOTHER NATURE – 1
TRVLSQD – 0 (Kinda, Sean Honeywell did attack the Cascades in defiance of ANY Weather!)

One of my favorite experiences will always be seeing the Team pulling up in their vehicles….eyeing who has come out to play. Introducing ourselves to those that have never joined a training session before, the smiles, the hugs…it is and will always be the little things that you miss if you don’t stop what you’re doing everyone once in a while and be present in the moment. It’s hard to create opportunities of lasting memories that present themselves – such as pulling (or not) a giraffe from the back-seat of a Mini-Cooper! Seeing everyone leaving that vehicle, only to have Brian Lohr (ADR – All Day Ruck-Off) stuck in the back seat.

    PRICELESS

We started the training with the typical start – 2 min Push-Ups, 2 min Sit-Ups. Now usually this is a pretty uneventful series of exercises (other than flatulence from prior – evening indulgence and the typical TRVLSQD sick sense of humor through inappropriate jokes). Since I finished before the hard-core (as in those having atomic-core strength) I happened to glance up and see what I thought was cheeseburger of some sort lying on the ground next to Donna. Upon closer inspection, I verified the object – McDonald’s Breakfast Hockey Puck (Donna’s a Canuck). I’d be lying if I didn’t admit this actually made my morning. And I couldn’t resist pushing the puck under her as she continued to crush those sit-ups.

…..Yes….this is how we started the 12-Miler

We stepped off onto the trail and spirits were high. The conversations flowed – maybe a little bit of Baileys, maybe a few cookies here and there, and yes – a BEER, or …….) 6 miles and the turn-around. The sun made an unexpected appearance, warming the trail and evaporating the water from the blacktop. It was a good ruck. We stayed on pace, shuffled, walked, shuffled, walked….until it was over. We were under 3:30…all that matters.

    START TOGETHER – FINISH TOGETHER

I won’t reveal all of the magic that was the Cedar River 12-Miler, some things are just better left unsaid:

Baileys & Cookies BEFORE, DURING, AFTER the 12-Miler
    Brian Lohr Sardine Cooper
    Canadian Hockey Puck-Ups
Pretzels the Size of Your Face
    Wiener Comparisons
    Bathroom Greeting from the Hoff

    TEAM FIRST – BEER ALWAYS

  • SPARTAN 300 at the Tacoma Armory

Saturday, February 8th, 8am at the Tacoma Armory, was the site of a 2-Hour Smoke Session brought to you by the Spartan Organization. I had helped to set-up this workout with Andi Hardy – the 300 Workout Coordinator, and Sandy Henderson – Local Spartan Event Contact and Street Team Leader for the PNW. It was a workout designed to help initiate folks to being more active and to help them to start thinking about potentially running a Spartan Sprint, or Super, Beast, etc. Andi was the workout leader, and she definitely led us through some notoriously difficult exercises (the burpee, alligator crawls, etc.) There were over 200 folks signed up, and we had our TRVLSQD Team on hand to suffer first – then beer later for sure! Thank you to those that attended this workout, and the post-session lunch was definitely a good time!

  • OPERATION WARM AMERICA – From NYC, to Portland, OR & Seattle

There are moments in life when you know you’re creating an experience, a memory that will shape the direction of your life. What you do with your time on this earth matters….to you and to those you affect. Thank you for those of you that help to make us a stronger Family – a stronger Team. This past weekend TEAM NYC, TEAM PDX, and TEAM SEATAC walked out into the night to find those that we can help. To not only warm those with clothing, but to warm their hearts knowing that WE care! We will not stop…we will not quit….we WILL continue what we have come together to do!

    LOVE FIRST – LIFE ALWAYS

  • Suffering for Others – The Passion of John Templeman & the Legendary Burpeeathon

Saturday morning in Seattle…The rain is coming down with a vengeance as the 12th Man Legion prepares for the battle against the New Orleans Saints just a few miles away. And I too am preparing…to help a friend with a battle unlike any other.

I’m at Crossfit Belltown (http://crossfitbelltown.com/) with the Seattle/Tacoma TRVLSQD Team to assist John Templeman in his quest to raise money for his beloved Green Beret Foundation (http://greenberetfoundation.org/). He’ll attempt to execute as many burpees in 6 hours as he can – a feat 99.9% of this world wouldn’t even consider attempting. I’d rather help manage the pouring of the cold nectar supplied by Georgetown Brewery (http://georgetownbeer.com/) ,update our teams across the country, and to simply be on hand to witness such an unusually beautiful spectacle!

John is a sinewy fella, a jovial spirit with the toughness of a truly weathered warrior. He had his “stage” set….the towels, the electrolyte drinks, the bucket of water, food, the countdown timer, the Team he had asked for, and most importantly – he had a focus as intense as any professional athlete (you’d just never know it – that Templeman grin reveals nothing, except to leave you wondering what is really going on in his mind).

As the minutes turned into hours, you could see the burpee demons nibbling on John’s shoulders, his wrists, and eventually a knee. Between watching the live broadcast of the game and trying to focus on the task at hand, I was lucky enough to simply watch John fight…..and fight….and fight, until he did reach the end of the suffering. Pride is the only thing anyone felt at this moment…a chance to congratulate John as his sweaty carcass lay on the floor. He had a new personal best, and he surpassed his financial goal. Mission complete.

To everyone that supported him, friends, family, co-workers, teammates, and those across the country – there is always something to be passionate about. Go find your passion – and suffer well!
